Gyula Bíró started his football career at MTK in 1905 at the age of 15. He was originally a goalkeper before becoming a midfielder. He scored 17 goals in 135 games in the Hungarian First division. With MTK, he was a three-time champion and a three-time cup winner. Bíró was only 16 when he first played in the national team, and participated in the 1912 Olympics, when Hungary were classified in fifth place. In his 36 games with the national team, Biró scored three goals. He retired relatively early at the age of 26. He then started a new career as a trainer at FC Nürnberg, Germany, in 1920, before a move to Poland, with Hasmonea Lwów, three years later and in 1924 he trained the Polish national team at the Olympics. Later, he returned to Germany as coach of FC Saarbrücken in 1926/27. In 1930, he trained FC Baia Mare in Romania, and later Atlético Marte in Mexico. Because of his Jewish origin, Bíró left Europe before the outbreak of World War II, and settled down in Mexico.
