He then signed with the Shamrock Rovers before joining Bohemians FC of the League of Ireland in 1947–48, making 30 appearances that season without scoring a goal. In that same season, he was selected for the Irish football team that competed in the men’s tournament at the 1948 Olympics in Ireland, which lost 3–1 in its only match to the Netherlands.
He later returned to the Shamrock Rovers in 1948–49 and played for St. Patrick’s Athletic in 1950. Standing at over 6 feet tall, he was noted as a versatile utility player who was capable of playing many different positions. Kavanagh later emigrated to the United States in 1954 and settled in Massachusetts with his wife and six children, and died there in 1993.
