Auguste Matisse was not related to his much better-known namesake Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Auguste was a painter, illustrator and glass painter. He studied in Dijon and Paris and was later, like his namesake, associated with Fauvism, mainly painting maritime landscapes. In 1895 he became a member of the Société des Artiste Français and in 1924 designed the official poster for the Chamonix Winter Games. In 1931 Matisse died of a stroke at his studio in Bréhat.
