Anders Järryd

Anders Järryd was a Swedish tennis player who won eight Grand Slam doubles titles. His professional career spanned from 1980 to 1996, during which he became world #1 in the doubles and world #5 as a singles player. Järryd turned professional in 1980, winning his first doubles title a year later with fellow countryman Hans Simonsson in Linz, Austria. Järryd had a prolific doubles career, winning 58 titles, the majority with either Simonsson, Stefan Edberg, or Australian John Fitzgerald. As a singles player he won eight titles, with his first victory also coming in Linz.

Järryd’s greatest success in doubles came at Grand Slams, with his first of eight titles coming at the 1983 French Open with partner Hans Simonsson. He would reach the final of the 1984 US Open and the 1986 French Open with partner Stefan Edberg but lost both times. The year 1987, however, was a true purple patch for Järryd when he won three out of the four titles. He and Edberg won the Australian Open and the US Open, and along with American Robert Seguso won the French Open. He only failed to win Wimbledon that year but did reach the tournament’s semi-finals with Edberg. The following year began his long partnership with John Fitzgerald, with the pair finishing runners-up at both the French Open and Wimbledon. In 1989 Järryd finally won at Wimbledon when he and Fitzgerald beat the American pair of Rick Leach and Jim Pugh. In 1991 he and Fitzgerald were triumphant at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. While he never won a Grand Slam singles title, Järryd still had an impressive record reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open (1987–88) and the US Open (1985), and the semi-finals of Wimbledon (1985).

Järryd competed in the singles and doubles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In the singles he lost to qualifier Carl-Uwe Steeb in the third round but won the bronze medal with Stefan Edberg in the doubles. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics he and Edberg competed once again in the doubles but the pair were knocked out in the first round by the American duo of Jim Courier and Pete Sampras.
