Date20 – 30 September 1988
StatusOlympic
LocationTe-ni-seu-jang, Ol-lim-pik Gong-won, Seoul
Participants64 from 32 countries
FormatSingle-elimination tournament.

The favorite in the men’s singles was Sweden’s Stefan Edberg, who had won the 1984 Olympic demonstration singles, and the 1988 Wimbledon Championship. Edberg won through to the semis, where he faced Czechoslovakia’s Miloslav Mečíř, who he had defeated at the Wimbledon semi-finals. But in Seoul, Mečíř turned the tables on Edberg, and then went on to win the gold medal the next day in four sets over Tim Mayotte of the United States. Mečíř won nine professional championships but never a Grand Slam title, although he made the final of the 1986 US Open and the 1989 Australian Open.
