Arvīds Jurgens was twice an Olympian, playing football at Paris in 1924 and then ice hockey at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936. In hockey, he played right wing for Rīga City, Rīga ASK, and Rīga Vanderer in a career that lasted from 1927-37. Jurgens represented Latvia in four different sports – football (21 caps), ice hockey (16 caps), basketball (4 caps), and bandy (2 caps). His ice hockey caps included the 1936 Winter Olympics, the 1932 European Championships, and the 1933 and 1935 World Championships. In the late 1920s he played football in Austria. Jurgens was a three-time Latvian champion in ice hockey and won one national title in basketball.
Jurgens became a football and hockey referee and served as an administrator in both sports. He eventually moved to Canada, living in Montréal, where he chaired an organization of Latvian sportsmen.
