Ernst Gottlieb

Ernst Gottlieb played tennis doubles at the 1924 Olympics. He played once at Roland Garros, losing in the first round of singles in 1926. Gottlieb played Wimbledon in 1927, losing in round one of singles and mixed, and making the third round of doubles. A doubles specialist, Gottlieb won national doubles titles in 1924, 1925, and 1927, adding a mixed doubles title in 1927. He played Davis Cup for Czechoslovakia in 1927.

Gottlieb studied at the College of Textiles in Leeds, England where he learned tennis and also competed in rowing. On return to Czechoslovakia he did military service in Brno, serving with Field Artillery Regiment No. 6. During World War I he was called to the Eastern Front where he was promoted to Lieutenant. Gottlieb was wounded in the summer of 1917, and was captured by the enemy, but survived the war. Gottlieb returned to Czechoslovakia where he worked as a director of a.s. Victoria in Brno, which specialized in rubber production.

Gottlieb emigrated to France in 1939 and tried to serve in the military in World War II but was not accepted because of his age. He moved to Brazil in May 1940 where he engaged in trade with his brother.
