Biography

Einar Friis Baastad played as a left defender for Mercantile in Kristiania (now Oslo) from 1906-13. He helped his club win the Norwegian Cup in 1907 and 1912. In 1910 he played in Norway’s first ever international match on home ground, both ending in a 4-0 defeat against Sweden. Until 1913 he won a total of six caps. At the 1912 Olympic Games, he represented Norway in both matches to Denmark and Austria losing without scoring a goal.

After graduating from the Kristiania Handelsgymnasium in 1907, Baastad worked in the trade and shipping business, for instance as office clerk for the food company “Nestlé und Anglo Swiss Condensed Milk“. From 1913-21 he was assigned to the Norwegian consulate in Genova (Genoa) in Italy. He was then appointed consul in Rio de Janeiro for the period from 1921-24. In 1921, he became Knight of the Order of St. Olav for his “merits to Norwegian shipping interests”. Later he lived as a businessman to Berlin until his death. He was married to Gerda Auguste Elisabeth (née Baum).
