Biography
Lorenzo Fernández was considered one of the best midfielders in the world at the turn of the 1920s and 30s. An irreplaceable first choice of the Uruguayan team that triumphed first at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and two years later at the inaugural World Cup, he had physical strength, a strong temperament, and great ability downfield. In the 1930 World Cup final he was one of the men of the match.
With the national team Fernández earned 31 caps and scored four goals, also winning two Copa Americas, in 1926 and 1935. His palmarès include four national titles with Peñarol Montevideo: 1928-29, 1932, and 1935.
