Carla Overbeck was a defender who played on the US National Team throughout the 1990s, winning a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Overbeck was on the 2000 US Olympic team that won a silver medal but did not play. She helped the US win FIFA World Cup titles in 1991 and 1999, after a career in which she starred at the University of North Carolina. She also won a bronze medal at the 1995 FIFA World Cup and a gold medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games. During her international career she earned 170 caps.
Overbeck briefly played professional soccer (football) in 2001-02 with the Carolina Courage. She later became a coach, serving as an assistant at Duke University for several decades. She is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame (2006) and was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
