Charlie Altemose grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He first played in the American Soccer League (ASL) in 1935, with the Philadelphia German-Americans and then Brooklyn Hispano, and appeared again after the war in 1947, with the Philadelphia Nationals. Altemose helped the German-Americans to win the 1936 National Challenge Cup. Altemose was capped once for the United States, in their 1-0 loss to Italy at the 1936 Olympics.
