Mike Burns played soccer (football) for the US at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He was born and raised in Marlborough, Massachusetts and in 1987 was Massachusetts High School Player of the Year. He attended Hartwick College from 1988-91 and also played for the US at the 1987 U-16 FIFA World Cup and the 1989 U-20 FIFA World Cup. He was on the US team for the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, but did not play in 1994.
Burns joined Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996 with the New England Revolution. He played for them through 2000 and then joined the San Jose Earthquakes for a year, before playing his final two years with the Kansas City Wizards. He also played professional football briefly in 1995 with Viborg in Denmark.
Burns later entered soccer administration in the US. In 2005, he was named the New England Revolution’s Director of Soccer, holding that position until 2008, when he was promoted to Vice President of Player Personnel. In November 2011, he was promoted to General Manager of the New England Revolution.
