Frank Klopas

Fotios “Frank” Klopas was a Greek-American who played both forward and midfield. He came to the United States when he was 8-years-old and became a US citizen in 1984. Settling in Chicago, his professional career started with the indoor Chicago Sting from 1983-88. He then returned to Greece to play for AEK Athina FX from 1988-94, and then was with Appolon Athina from 1994-96. Klopas then played in the US with the Kansas City Wizards in 1996-97, before ending his playing career with the Chicago Fire in 1998-99.

Klopas was on the US National Team from 1987-98, earning 39 caps, and scoring 12 international goals. He played for the US at the 1988 Olympics and at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He retired in early 2000 and became a member of the Illinois Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005.

In 2000 Klopas became the Chicago Fire’s strength and conditioning trainer, spending one season in that role. In 2004 he became head coach and general manager of the Chicago Storm in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). He was named manager of the Chicago Fire in late 2011, holding that position through 2015 when he was released. Klopas has also worked in Chicago with a youth soccer club, the FC Drive.
