Curt Onalfo was a sweeper who played college soccer (football) at the University of Virginia, under future US National Team coach Bruce Arena. Internationally he played for the USA on the U-20 and U-23 teams as well as at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Onalfo began his professional career in 1991 with La Ciotat in France, but in 1993 he developed Hodgkin’s disease, and the disease, and the requisite chemotherapy, halted his career, and came close to killing him. He recovered and began playing indoors with the Connecticut Wolves in 1994-95. Onalfo later played in MLS (Major League Soccer) with the Los Angeles Galaxy, DC United, and the San Jose Clash.
Onalfo retired in 1999 and began managing soccer clubs and started his own business, Curt Onalfo Soccer. He coached in MLS with the Galaxy, DC United, and the Kansas City Wizards and was a US National Team assistant from 2003-07. In MLS he was mostly an assistant but did serve as head coach of DC United in 2009-10.
