Claudio Reyna is considered one of the greatest soccer (football) players in US history. A midfielder, Reyna played on the US national team from 1994-2006, earning 111 caps. He played in four FIFA World Cups (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006). Reyna played in college at the University of Virginia where he was named Soccer America Player of the Year in 1992 and 1993, and won the Hermann Trophy in 1993. The magazine named Reyna the US collegiate player of the century in 2000.
Professionally Reyna played in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen from 1994-99, also being loaned to VfL Wolfsburg from 1997-99. From 1999-2007 he played in England, with the Scottish Premier League Rangers from 1999-2001, then with Sunderland in 2001-03, before playing for Manchester City in the English Premier League (EPL) from 2003-07. Reyna finished his playing career with one season in the MLS, with the New York Red Bulls in 2007/08.
Reyna then went into soccer administration. In 2013 he was appointed as the director of football for the new MLS team, New York City FC. He has established the Claudio Reyna Foundation, a non-profit devoted to providing soccer training and mentoring to underprivileged youth in the United States. Reyna was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2012.
