Willy Schaller was born in Germany but came to the United States with his family when he was a young boy. Schaller joined the Schwaben Soccer Club in the German-American Soccer League while still in high school. He served in the US Army from 1953-55, and later played soccer for Blau-Weiss Gottschee until 1960. Schaller played for the US at the 1952 Olympics and at the 1959 Pan American Games, where he helped the US team win a bronze medal. He later became a youth and high school soccer coach.
