Semp Russ attended the University of Texas where he played quarterback on the football team from 1898-1900. He also attended Tulane for a time, but eventually earned a law degree from Texas. He later practiced law but was interested in medicine and established the Semp Russ Foundation which set up an endowment for the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. In tennis, Russ won 15 Texas State Sectional titles, in singles and doubles, and won the Southwestern Championship three times.
