Gregg Thompson

Gregg Thompson was a top athlete in high school in Stillwater, Minnesota, averaging 8.9 yards per carry as a running back in football (American). He also ran track and went to the state finals his senior year. Although he received offers to play football and run track in college, he preferred soccer and went to Indiana University. In 1982 Thompson led Indiana to the NCAA final against Duke, which became one of the most famous games in US college history. Thompson scored early for Indiana, but Duke tied the game 1-1, and it went to overtime. The match eventually went eight overtimes with Thompson winning the NCAA title for Indiana with a goal on a free kick.

Thompson played for the US national team in 1984-85, earning 12 caps and playing at the 1984 Olympics. In 1983 he was signed by the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League and played one season for them, before playing with the Minnesota Strikers of the Major Indoor Soccer League from 1984-88. After his soccer career ended, Thompson coached youth soccer and worked for a real estate group.
