Herb Wells was from Brockton, Massachusetts and played his club football with Fleisher Yarn FC, a top amateur soccer power in New England. In 1924 the club became a professional side and joined the American Soccer League (ASL), but it folded after one year. Wells earned three caps playing for the US national team, one in the US loss to Uruguay in the Olympic quarter-finals and then in exhibition games against Poland and Ireland after the Olympics.
