Biography

Xenophon won the stadion and pentathlon at the same Olympic Games. He repeated the feat at Pythia, causing Pindar to write of him, “He has won what no mortal man has won before.” Before leaving for Olympia, Xenophon had prayed to the goddess Aphrodite and announced that if he won he would provide her with 50 courtesans for her shrine. Xenophone also won twice at Isthmia, six times and Pythia, and several times at Nemea. His father, Thessalos, and his grandfather, Pteodoros, as well as several other relatives, were also famous athletes.
