Ptolemy II of Philadelphus was a champion in the tethrippon at the 124th Olympiad in 284 BCE. Ptolemy II was the son of Ptolemy I Soter, a general under Alexander the Great, and Queen Berenice I. In 283 BCE he ascended to the throne and was made pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt, a role he held until his death in 246 BCE. His reign was notable for elevating Alexandria as one of the premier cities of ancient Egypt, especially known for its great library. His empire encompassed much of the Aegean and Levant, and Ptolemy II was aggressive in attempting to expand the empire, with mixed success. Ptolemy II’s first marriage was to his sister, Arsinoe II.
