Biography

Irene Abel was a member of the East German women’s gymnastics team from 1971-74, during which time she won the team silver medal at both the 1972 Summer Olympics in München, and the 1974 World Championships in Varna. Individually, in the all-around events, she was 11th at München and 14th at Varna, but failed to reach any apparatus finals. She also failed to win an East German national title, but, in 1973, was the first gymnast to win the “Tournament of Champions” in Schwerin.

Abel later became a gymnast coach and coached, among others, her daughter Katja, who was a member of the 2008 German Olympic team at Beijing. In addition to gymnastics, Irene also coached archery in Berlin.
