East German gymnast Dagmar Kersten won the team bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. She finished eighth in the individual all-around and qualified for the horse vault and the uneven bars finals. In the horse vault she placed sixth, but won the silver medal on the uneven bars.
At the 1985 European Championships, Kersten won bronze in the horse vault. The same year she won three bronze medals at the Worlds in the individual all-around, the horse vault, and with the team. She also won the silver medal on the uneven bars. Domestically, she won six national titles.
After re-unification, Kersten moved to live with her mother in Celle, before moving to Stuttgart, where she trained as an office clerk with the Swabian Gymnastics Association. Kersten became press officer at the Lower Saxony Gymnastics Federation in 2006. She made her own doping history public in 2011 when she was then recognized as a doping victim. Later she ran a martial arts and movement arts school near Oldenburg.
