Biography

Tamara Manina won the junior Soviet all-around gymnastics title in 1953 and then advanced to the senior level, where she would win numerous victories through 1963. During that time, she won six medals at the Summer Olympics in 1956 and 1964, including gold in the team all-around both years, but missed the 1960 edition due to injury. She was even more successful at the World Championships, winning team gold in 1954, 1958, and 1962, as well as individual titles in the vault and floor exercise in 1954, silver in the vault and bronze in the all-around in 1958, and bronze in the vault in 1962. At the Europeans, she took silver in the vault in 1957 and the floor exercise in 1959, and bronze on the balance beam in 1957.

Manina retired from competition following an ankle injury at the end of 1964. She graduated from the Leningrad State Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics the following year and received a Candidate of Science degree from the Lesgaft State Institute of Physical Culture in 1969. She then worked as a professor of science.
