Betty Jean Maycock was still in high school at the time of the 1960 Olympics but later attended Kent State University. While at Kent State she was on the first US collegiate women’s gymnastics team, graduating in 1964. Maycock starred at the 1959 Pan American Games, winning a team gold medal, and silvers in all-around, uneven bars, and vault. She was AAU champion in 1959 on floor exercise and in 1960 on pommelled horse. Maycock later earned a PhD in child development from the University of Maryland. She eventually worked with the organization Microcredit in Africa, implementing microcredit projects in Africa, notably in Niger.
