Raimo Heinonen

Gymnast Raimo Heinonen made his major international début for Finland at the 1955 European Championships, and then hit the peak of his career one year later when he won bronze with the team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Individually, his best result was joint-18th in the horizontal bar. He attended two more editions of the Olympics, 1960 and 1964, where he was sixth and eighth with the team respectively. He also competed at the European Championships in 1957, 1961, 1963, and 1965, taking silver in the vault in his final year. Domestically he won 11 national titles, seven individual and four with the team.

Following his retirement from active competition, Heinonen was head coach of the national team from 1967 through 1969, and then served the sport in various administrative capacities. His son Jari was a multiple national champion in the 1980s.
