As in 1960, the best six gymnasts in the individual all-around advanced to the apparatus final. The final apparatus score was made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. This was an unusual podium, led by Japan’s Haruhiro Yamashita who led after the qualifying and also had the highest score in the finals to win easily by.275 points over Soviet Viktor Lisitsky. This was Yamashita’s only Olympics and the vault was the only apparatus event in which he made the final, although he had won the silver medal at the 1962 World Championships. The bronze was another surprise, going to Finland’s Hannu Rantakari, whose best other apparatus finish in two Olympics (1964-68) was 26th in the 1964 floor exercise.
Top six on horse vault in team all-around advance to apparatus final. 50% of qualifying score added to optional exercise done in finals.
