Biography

Yrjö Vuolio was born under the name Willgren as then son of a bricklayer. The family changed their name to Vuolio in 1906. At the 1912 Olympic Games, he competed in the individual all-around event but did not finish. He lived in Valkeala for some time but returned to Tampere in 1920. In 1921, he immigrated to the United States with his wife Anna Maria Haahti (aka Herranen) and his four daughters and one son. Just months after their arrival, his wife died from a serious illness at the age of 30. Vuolio was a railway and factory worker. In the 1930s, he lived in Tampere again, where he eventually died.
