Biography

John Weiland was a Canadian basketball referee who officiated at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He spent over 20 years as a ref at the international level, officiating at the World University Games, Pan American Games, and the FIBA World Cup, and was a referee for seven years in the World Basketball League. He also officiated at the Canadian collegiate championships 17 times.

Weiland served as an educator, assignor, evaluator, and executive for other Canadian officials. He received numerous honors, being named to the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019, receiving the Basketball Canada J. A. Willox Award and the Air Canada Amateur Sports Official Award in 1988. He was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and in 2016 received the Canadian Association of Basketball Officials’ Ted Earley Award.
