Giancarlo Vitolo refereed 524 top league games in Italy from 1967-89. He became an international referee in 1970 and officiated at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, the 1983 European Championships, the 1971 and 1979 Women’s World Championships, and the 1972 Women’s European Championship. He often officiated alongside Bruno Duranti.
Vitolo was awarded the CONI Bronze Star in 2003 and also received the Bovi Prize (1964/65), the Martiradonna Prize (1979 and 1989), the ANAIB Prize (1981), and the Reverberi Prize (1988). Vitolo was a pharmacist by profession.
