Biography

Jan Jarzebinski began to play basketball in 1946 but had already begun his career as a referee a year earlier while at junior high school. Two years later Jarzebinski had passed his referee exams, officiating in his first league matches in 1953/54 season. By 1962 he had moved up to the international circuit where he refereed at the men’s European Championships (1969, 1973, 1979), and the women’s European Championships (1974).

Jarzebinski officiated in several matches at the 1972 München Games, becoming the third Polish basketball referee to oversee matches at the Olympics after Czesław Czmoch (1964) and Czesław Raczyński (1968). Jarzebinski’s final match as a referee was at the Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 1983.
