Charles Sederman

Charles Sederman was born in the English county of Somerset but moved to Wales at an early age. As a member of the Cardiff St. Saviours Gymnastic Club he was part of the team that won the Welsh Amateur Gymnastics Association Challenge Shield for eight consecutive years. Sederman was a member of the Welsh national gymnastic team between 1906 and 1909 and was picked to represent Great Britain in the team event in the 1908 Olympic Games.

Awarded the captaincy of the Welsh team for 1909 he won the Welsh individual all-around title the same year. As well as his gymnastics successes Sederman was an accomplished athlete and finished second in the high jump and third, behind fellow Olympians Wallis Walters and William Titt, in the 120 yards hurdles at the Welsh Championships in 1910.

He also played first-class rugby for Penarth and was one of the founders of the Welsh Amateur Boxing Association. He served the WABA as secretary and was active as both as a boxing judge and referee for many years. It was in his capacity as a judge that he returned to the Olympic arena in 1948 and would have fulfilled a similar role in Helsinki had not ill health intervened. He died little more than a month after the Games ended.
