A gardener by trade, Enos Walton was one of ten children to Sheffield fishmonger Walker Walton. Enos was a member of the Eccleshill Congregational Church and joined their gymnastics club, later becoming its captain and instructor. Walton specialised in rope climbing and was a regular member of the Eccleshill club in the annual Bradford and District Team Championships. He also represented the Bradford District in the annual match against the Leeds and Huddersfield districts, and also represented Bradford in the Adams Shield for the National Team Championship,
Walton served as a corporal with the 13th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment in World War I. He was disabled out in 1917 after receiving injuries to his right hand, which included the loss of his thumb, while serving in France. That same year, his brother Ward was killed in action, while another brother Frank received serious injuries. Both were also fighting in France at the time.
