Georg Hillmar was only a substitute for the German gymnastics team, replacing the injured Richard Gadebusch two days before they left for Greece. Nevertheless he won two team gold medals with the German teams on the parallel bars and the horizontal bar.
After their return home, most team participants were excluded from the reactionary German Gymnastics Association as they were “involved in a sporting event dedicated to internationalism.” The winning teams were banned from national competitions in Berlin. Hillmar was born in 1876 in Berlin and also died there in 1911.
