Accompanied by his brother Carlo, Luigi Costigliolo took home a gold medal from the Antwerp Olympics, where the Italian all-around team was the class of the competition. He had been active in gymnastics already before the Olympics, being sent out to international competition first in 1909. He won individual all-around competitions at international events in Nice, Vichy and Lugano (1913) and Genova and Luxemburg (1914) before the outbreak of the Great War.
