Sigurd Smebye won an Olympic bronze medal with the Norwegian team in gymnastics in the all-around Swedish system team event at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. For some time, he lived with his teammate Peter Hol.
Smebye was the son of a captain but worked as a sales representative in chocolate and candies. In 1917, he married Ingeborg Jahr. Their only son, Sigurd Jahr Smebye (1922-85), was a Norwegian meteorologist and weather forecaster for NRK, both on radio and television.
