Hermenegildo Candeias was a Portuguese gymnast and swimmer who represented Ginásio Clube Português. As a gymnast Candeias won multiple national titles and competed at the 1960 Roma Olympics. However, his Olympic results were disappointing, with a best individual performance coming in the pommel horse where he finished in 106th place. Candeias was best remembered for being responsible for the introduction of trampolining as a speciality in Portugal in the 1970s.
After retiring Candeias became a national coach, judge, and a member of the board of directors of the Association of Portuguese Olympic Athletes. He also wrote for the sporting press, including the newspapers Mundo Desportivo and Record.
