Center runner Wolfgang, father of Sven Lakenmacher, was on the East German handball team at the 1972 München Olympics that unfortunately lost the bronze medal match, 19-16, against Romania. He earned 198 international caps. In 1970 and 1974 he won silver medals at the Worlds.
Domestically, Wolfgang Lakenmacher played with SC Magdeburg from 1967-77, helping them to win East German Championships in 1970 and 1977. He turned to coaching after his active career and coached, among others, the Bundesliga club TV Großwallstadt after re-unification.
