Karin Prokop was a member of the Austrian female handball team that participated in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. The team finished sixth and last in the round-robin tournament. In 1992, she returned to the Olympics at Barcelona and finished fifth with the Austrian team. She won 229 international caps and scored 215 goals. Prokop played domestically with Hypobank Südstadt Wien (Vienna).
Hailing from a sporting family, Karin was the daughter of famous high jumper and pentathlete Liese Sykora-Prokop, and handball coach Gunnar Prokop. Her aunt Maria Sykora participated in the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics, and her cousin Thomas Sykora was an Olympic Alpine skier.
By profession, Prokop trained as an insurance agent. Later she managed the Austrian female handball team from 1994-96. In 2002 she founded her own consultancy for coaching, professional training, and recruitment activities. She was also active as a regional politician for the right-wing party ÖVP.
