Forward Alfred Schmalzer was a member of the Austrian field handball team that won the silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He played three matches during the tournament. Domestically, he played with Ferrowatt Wien (Vienna). Schmalzer was killed in action during World War II in 1944.
