As a high school player, Calvin Murray was chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 1989 MLB Draft, but he elected instead to play college ball at the University of Texas. Murray starred at Texas and was later inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 2007. He set a school record with 139 stolen bases, including 49 in his freshman year.
In 1992 Murray was chosen by the San Francisco Giants, again in the first round of the MLB Draft, as the seventh overall pick. An outfielder, he spent six years in the minors in the Giants organization until he was called up for a few games at the end of the 1999 season. He then played two full seasons with the Giants in 2000-01. In 2002 the Giants traded him to the Texas Rangers and he played a few games with them that year. Murray finished his MLB career in 2004 with the Chicago Cubs, finishing with a career batting average of .231.
