Heidi Sundal was part of the Norwegian team that surprisingly won a bronze medal in the 1986 World Championship in the Netherlands, which was the start of Norwegian success in handball. In addition to her two Olympic silver medal winning appearances, she also played in three other World Championships, placing seventh in 1982 in Hungary, sixth in 1990 in Korea and winning a another bronze medal in 1993 in Norway. She retired after the 1993 season.
Sundal played back on her club in Norway, but on the national team she played on the line. She earned 268 international caps and scored 727 goals for Norway. In a match in the 1987/88 season she made a record that stood for 22 years, scoring 21 goals in one match in the Norwegian top division. Sundal played for Nordstrand IL her whole career, helping the club win the 1987 national title.
After her playing career Sundal worked with banks, in insurance, and as an expert commentator on radio. She had two sons, both of whom also played in the Norwegian top division.
