Biography

Soviet handball player and coach Yuri Klimov was an Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR (1973) and Olympic champion at Montréal in 1976. He was awarded the Cavalier of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1976.

Russian-born Klimov played 173 matches for the USSR National Team and won the silver medal at the 1978 World Championships. Domestically, he won the Soviet Union championship seven times, and the cup once. From 1979, Klimov was coach of the USSR youth team, and from 1980-82 was coach of the national team of the Soviet Union. In 2006, he led the Iranian team to the bronze medal at the Asian Games. Later he coached the Iranian club Zob Akhan.
