Amy Gamble was a basketball star in high school, being chosen as the 1982 West Virginia women’s basketball player of the year. She also starred in track & field, winning the state championship in both the shot put and discus. She went to the University of Tennessee, where she played one season of basketball as a back-up, and then transferred to West Virginia University. At West Virginia, Gamble played one more season of basketball, but then left the sport to concentrate on playing handball and making the Olympic team. Gamble played for the US in 1987, helping them win gold at the Pan American Games, and then played at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. After the Olympics, Gamble finished college at the University of Arizona, where she used her final year of collegiate eligibility in basketball, leading the Wildcats in scoring.
