Carol Peterka went to the University of Minnesota on a basketball scholarship and also competed in track & field for the Gophers. After graduating in 1987 she joined the US National handball team, competing at three Olympics for the USA. Peterka was on the gold medal winning team at the 1990, 1991, and 1993 US Olympic Festivals. She won gold medals at the 1987 and 1995 Pan American Games. Peterka was the 1990 US Team Handball Female Athlete of the Year and captained the national team from 1990-92.
While playing for the US National Team, Peterka was a physical education teacher and coach at Poinciana High School in Florida. He later served in the same roles in Cobb County, Georgia, coaching basketball. In 2006 she became the assistant women’s basketball coach at Hofstra University.
