Matt Ryan played basketball on Long Island and earned a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts as the New York State high school player of the year. He would eventually be inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame for his exploits. Ryan joined the USA National Handball team in 1989 and played with them from 1989-96. He was capped 225 times, the most (through 2018) of any American ever.
Ryan played in club handball for the Garden City team on Long Island and then played from 1996-2002 for Condor Handball. He later became executive director of regional development at Georgia Tech.
