Joe Story attended Willamette College, where he played football and was an NAIA All-American as a receiver. He was on the US national handball team from 1978-88, and was the oldest member of the team at the 1988 Olympics. He was team player of the year in 1980 and 1986 and competed at two Olympic Games, the 1986 Goodwill Games, the 1987 Pan American Games, winning a gold medal, and the 1985 and 1986 World Championships. He was elected to the Willamette College Hall of Fame in 1993.
