At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Josè Roberto Chirino, a 20-year-old Argentine light-middleweight, attacked the Egyptian referee Khalil El-Maghrabi after he had taken away a point in a second round match. Chirino, who had beaten the Jamaican Johnny Elliott in round one, was disqualified and the victory went to the Soviet Boris Lagutin, who would later win the gold medal. The Argentine boxer apologized to the referee before leaving the ring.
In the following years Chirino went on to have 35 professional bouts with a record of 20 wins (11 by KO), 11 losses (5 by KO) and 4 draws. He was South American super-welterweight champion from May 1969 to May 1970 and in March 1971 he achieved a prestigious victory against Nino Benvenuti. Chirino ended his career in November 1975 after a defeat by Emile Griffith.
