Biography

Early in his judo career Mark Carew won bronze in the -93 kg class at the 1975 Oceania Junior Championships in Christchurch. For more than a decade Carew became a mainstay at the Australian Judo Championships, in addition to representing his country at multiple international competitions. In 1977 he won his first national title with gold in the -86 kg, successfully defending his title at the next three consecutive tournaments. Carew then moved up to the -95 kg class, winning four further consecutive titles from 1981 to 1984. He finished his career with back-to-back silver medals in the same weight-class at the national championships in 1987 and 1988.

In 1977 Carew won gold in the open event and silver in the -86 kg class at the Oceania Judo Championships in Melbourne. Two years later in Rotorua he defended his open title, along with winning bronze in the -85 kg. Carew was then selected to represent Australia at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, but lost his opening bout to Krzysztof Kurczyna (POL) to be eliminated.
