Known for his blinding speed, Tommy Martin had a very long judo career. He entered his first tournament in 1971 and competed for the US at the 1973 World Championships and the 1974 Pan American Confederation tournament, where he placed first. He won US Championships in 1974-75, 1980, and 1984-85. His major international title came in winning the 1984 Dutch Open. Martin continued to place on the podium at the US meet through 1994. He attended San Jose State University.
